Many Jewish immigrants, who came to the United Kingdom or the USA, changed their last name to Coen or [Cowan for a simpler English pronunciation. Cowan is also a Scottish surname originally spelled MacEoghain meaning ‘son of Eoghan’.

In Dutch, the name Coen... is the short form of Coenraad, a variant of the Germanic name Conrad meaning 'brave counsel'.
