Diego mean?

There are currently two competing interpretations for the Spanish name Diego. The name could be a variant of Jacob, which means ‘God may protect’ and is of Hebrew origin. According to another reading, the origin of the name lies in the Norman name ‘Didacus’, which means ‘saint’.

A Hood Island giant tortoise... is named Diego. He is thought to have been hatched in the 1910s and was captured around 1930. In June 2020, Diego was released into the wild.

Diego Armando Maradona Franco (1960-2020)
Nicknamed »El Pibe de Oro« (»The Golden Boy«) Maradona is considered one of the best soccer players in history. He celebrated the greatest successes of his club career with SSC Napoli, including the club's first league titles in 1987 and 1990 and winning the UEFA Cup in 1989. He captained the Argentinian national team to their second World Cup victory in Mexico in 1986. There he also scored two of the most famous goals in soccer history in a 2-1 win over England in the quarter-finals. Firstly by deflecting a high ball into the goal with his hand, known as the »hand of God«, and then scoring the World Cup goal of the century after dribbling some 60 meters.

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660)
Usually referred to as »Diego Velázquez« he was one of the most important portrait painters of his time. As a painter at the court of the Spanish King Philip IV, he created portraits of numerous members of the royal family and members of the court. Velázquez produced many paintings of art-historical significance. Probably the most famous one by his hand is »Las Meninas« from 1656. From the early 19th century onwards, Velázquez's work was an inspiration for many artists, his works influenced Francisco de Goya and the Impressionist Édouard Manet, among others.
