Obi is a first name for boys.
There’s a good chance that a boy named Obi in a medium-sized town will be unique. That’s because only a few babies a year are named Obi in all of the US. Only about one in 100,000 boys is named Obi by his parents. In the ranking of most common boys names in recent years, Obi ranks at #5,066. That means there are 5,065 more common boys names, but there are also a few thousand that are even rarer. If you polled the whole US population – children, adults and seniors – you’d find less than one in 10,000 to be named Obi.
Meeting a man or boy named Obi is something really special. Out of all 50 states, men and boys named Obi can be found in only two: California and Texas. No other state currently has residents named Obi. However, we must admit that a given name is only included in a state’s official statistics if there are at least five people with that name living in that state – so it’s quite possible that there are still a few men and boys called Obi living in one state or another. (If your name is Obi and you live outside of California or Texas, we’d really appreciate it if you’d let us know so we can refine our statistics even further.) Either way, the name is quite rare. The best chance of meeting a Obi is in California, as there live more men and boys with this name in relation to the population than in any other state. But even here in California, only 0.00007% of all male residents are called Obi – that’s just one in 1,484,698! And even in all these states combined there are only a total of 16 men going by that name. So, if your name is Obi, chances are you will never meet another man bearing that extraordinary first name.
Well, you might say, you probably figured that out yourself! But what you might not know is: The letter O is pretty rare as an initial letter for boys' names: only 1.8% of all common boys' names in the US begin with an O. The most common first letters of boys' names, by the way, are J, A and D, while X, U and Q are the least common initials of boys' names.
With only three letters, the name Obi is obviously very short. In fact, only 1.0% of all common first names in the US consist of exactly three letters. Just 0.2% of all first names are even shorter and only have two letters, while nearly 99% of all boys’ and girls’ names use more than three letters. On average, first names in the US (not counting hyphenated names) are 6.5 letters long. There are no significant differences between boys' and girls' names.
That means that since 1.8% of all boys’ names begin with an O, this initial occurs only about half as often as the other letters on average. Nevertheless, there are of course single names beginning with an O, which are quite popular
