Sharia is a female first name.
Recently, the name Sharia has been given only a handful of times a year and is therefore particularly rare, at least in the US. In recent years, not even one girl in 100,000 has been named Sharia. That means that a girl named Sharia is exceptional and may not meet another person with the same name her whole life. If you polled the whole US population – children, adults and seniors – you’d find less than one in 10,000 to be named Sharia.
Do you know the feeling when you go to the zoo and the animal that is supposed to be in the enclosure is not there? You know it should be there, but you've never seen it? It's the same with Sharia. Girls named Sharia have made themselves scarce. But some parents got a taste for it a few years ago: At No. 2,401 Sharia ranked higher than ever before in 1977. By comparison, there have been 98 years in which the first name Sharia has not been given at all (or less than 5 times, which is the minimum number required for a name to be included in the statistics), most recently in 2022. In general, parents name their daughters Sharia only once in a blue moon, so girls and women with this name can consider themselves exceptional!
In years where the graph has no value, the name Sharia was given less than five times or even none at all in the entire USA.
Meeting a woman or girl named Sharia is something really special. Out of all 50 states, women and girls named Sharia can be found in only two: Michigan and Pennsylvania. No other state currently has residents named Sharia. However, we must admit that a given name is only included in a state’s official statistics if there are at least five people with that name living in that state – so it’s quite possible that there are still a few women and girls called Sharia living in one state or another (if your name is Sharia and you live outside of Michigan or Pennsylvania, we’d really appreciate it if you’d let us know so we can refine our statistics even further). Either way, the name is quite rare. The best chance of meeting a Sharia is in Michigan, as there live more women and girls with this name in relation to the population than in any other state. But even here in Michigan, only 0.00009% of all female residents are named Sharia – that’s just one in 1,154,706! And even in all these states combined there are only a total of 10 women with that name. So, if your name is Sharia, chances are you will never meet another woman with your beautiful first name.
Well, you might say, you probably figured that out yourself! But what you might not know is: The letter S is a very popular first letter for girls' names. That’s because 9.3% of all common girls’ names in the US begin with this letter. Only the first letter A is more common for girls' names.
With six letters, the name Sharia is of average length. In fact, 28% of all common first names in the US consist of exactly six letters. 24% of all first names are shorter, while 48% have seven letters or more. On average, first names in the US (not counting hyphenated names) are 6.5 letters long. There are no significant differences between boys' and girls' names.
That means that if 9.3% of all girls' names start with an S, this initial letter occurs nearly three times as often as all other letters on average. And by the way: Of all the girls' names that start with an S, Susan is the most common.
