What does the name
Vada mean?

The name Vada is known for a long time but its origin and meaning are unclear. It could be a variant of the name Veda, meaning ‘knowledge’ in Sanskrit, that has a surprisingly long tradition in the US.

Another suggestion is that... Vada is short for Nevada, a first name inspired by the name of the state. In Spanisch it means 'snow-scapped'.

Vada -
a special name with a long history

Vada is not one of the particularly popular names, in fact in some of the last 143 years it has been given so infrequently that it doesn't even show up in our statistics (here a name is only recorded in those years in which it was given to newborns at least five times). This was, for example, most recently the case in 1990, where the name Vada was given at most four times in the entire USA, perhaps even less or not even once. (If you are Vada and were born in the USA in 1990 please get in touch with us!) Before that, however, there was a time when the name was significantly more popular - way back in the last century, Vada even made it into the top 1,000 of our SmartGenius statistics of the most popular girls' names: In 1901, it ranked on position 322 - a popularity it has never reached again since then.

In years where the graph has no value, the name Vada was given less than five times or even none at all in the entire USA.

Happy Birthday - 328 girls named Vada celebrate their second birthday this year

Even though the popularity of the name Vada has fluctuated in the past and there were years when the name was almost not chosen at all by expectant parents, it has without question arrived in the 21st century. In 2022, the name was given a remarkable 328 times by young parents to their newborn daughters and thus landed at #774 in the SmartGenius ranking of the currently most popular girls' names. Nevertheless, the name is still so rare that the 328 girls named Vada, who are celebrating their second birthday this year, can rightly feel very special, because it is most likely that in their kindergarten they will be the only children who turn around when someone calls 'Vada'.

Vada has 4 letters
and begins with a V

Well, you might say, you probably figured that out yourself! But what you might not know is: The letter V is quite rare as an initial letter for girls' names: only 1.6% of all common girls' names in the US begin with V, which means that this initial occurs only about half as often as the other letters on average. But V is by no means the rarest initial. While Q, X and U are the least common initials of girls' names, the most common first letters of girls' names are A, S and M.

With four letters, the name Vada is shorter than most other given names. In fact, only 5.5% of all common first names in the US consist of exactly four letters. Just 1.2% of all first names are even shorter, while 93% consist of more than four letters. On average, first names in the US (not counting hyphenated names) are 6.5 letters long. There are no significant differences between boys' and girls' names.

From this follows that if 1.6% of all girls' names begin with a V, this initial letter is less common than the other letters on average. Incidentally, of the comparatively few girls' names that begin with a V, Virginia is currently the most common.
