Christiaan Barnard is a South African heart surgeon who, with his team, performed the first successful heart transplant. Dr Barnard ushered in a new era of heart surgery in 1967 when he transplanted the heart of a terminally ill patient into the body of a patient at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The patient Louis Washkansky survived the operation for 18 days. He went on to perform many more successful heart transplants, revolutionizing medicine. He has since become a legend in South Africa.
