The name Estella is an Italian name of Latin origin and is derived from the word ‘stella’ meaning ‘star’. The French variant Estelle is more commonly known than Estella.

Both variants experienced a revival... in the 19th century, probably because of a character named Estella in Charles Dickens' novel 'Great Expectations' (1860).
